ShareGift was set up to assist with unwanted small shareholdings, but we routinely deal with larger donations of shares as well.

Whilst the motivation for giving small amounts of shares is often to dispose of a nuisance asset, giving larger donations can be an excellent way for donors to make philanthropic donations. We class donations of shares worth more than £500 as large donations.

If your client is looking to support charity, a gift of shares – either to the charity ShareGift or directly to a beneficiary charity if they are set up to receive them – this can be a very tax-efficient way to give. Donors can typically claim income tax relief on the value of shares they donate. Capital Gains Tax does not apply to donations of shares.

Simple Share Donation

We are experts in share donation, and can guide you and your clients through the transfer process quickly and efficiently.

We can arrange for the transfer of assets with third party nominees, and have accounts set up with over 30 intermediary partners in the UK to further streamline the process, and to widen the number of assets we can receive. This includes accounts with specialist wealth management platforms such as Transact and Third Financial.

We typically benefit from free brokerage and waived management fees thanks to our partnerships in industry, meaning we can maximise the value created from donated assets.

Why Large Donors choose us

If your client wishes to give shares directly to a beneficiary charity and that charity is able to accept those assets, you should absolutely do so. However there are a number of reasons why donors choose to come to ShareGift with larger value shareholdings.

Remember…

ShareGift is an independent registered charity and grant-maker. We are not a stockbroking service for charities.

We are happy to help, but can only do so in line with our grant-making policy and large donor procedures.

You and your client should familiarise yourself with our Large Donor Notes. If you have any questions at all, please do get in touch.
