We accept donations of shares regardless of value

There are no charges or fees for donors, charities or our corporate partners for working with ShareGift.

Yes. We accept donations of shares regardless of the value, and frequently accept shareholdings with no listed value. This includes shares in privately listed companies and shares in companies which are in liquidation or administration. So long as the shares can be transferred and we are able to hold the asset in question, we can accept them. We set out to solve the problem of unwanted shareholdings – regardless of the value.

We can accept share donations of any size. We have specific procedures for dealing with larger donations and associated charity suggestions. Please do refer to our large donor notes.

There is no fixed list of charities we can support, and we have given to more than 4,000 charities in the UK. We are giving to new charities all the time.

We can give to any area of charitable work, and we give to UK charities suggested to us by our donors, our corporate partners and some charities identified by independent research. We only support UK registered charities. The exceptions to this are certain organisations exempt from charitable status requirements (for example some educational organisations) and a selection of charities registered in Ireland. 

We ask all our donors for charity suggestions, regardless of the value of the shares donated, and this is the most important factor in determining the charities we support. Over the years we have received tens of thousands of suggestions for thousands of different charities. We aim to give to every qualifying charity suggested to us. This is subject to due diligence and our grant-making policy; we always want to ensure that we are supporting charities that are responsibly run and appropriately supported. You will be given the option to suggest a charity when you donate shares to us.

In most cases you should still be able to donate your shares. Send us details of your shareholding and we will let you know how best to proceed.

Unfortunately the registrars will only accept an original signature. Therefore you will need to send us the signed transfer form by post.

We do not require a National Insurance Number/Date of Birth to transfer all shares, however if we have requested your National Insurance Number it is because we need to include this information to complete your donation to ShareGift. These are regulatory requirements from the Financial Conducts Authority in the UK.

We work closely with a large number of stockbrokers in the UK. Simply tell them you wish to donate the shares to ShareGift and they should contact us directly. Do remember to contact us with details of the shares donated if you have a charity suggestion. Please contact us if you require further guidance.

Yes. Simply let us know that you wish to donate cash held in this way and we will send you the appropriate form.

In most instances we can accept shares registered overseas, although we cannot always arrange the transfer ourselves.  Send us details of your shareholding and we will let you know how to proceed. Transfers of US securities can be problematic, and we have to treat each donation on a case-by-case basis.

We make no charge to donors or charities, and we designate all funds arising from share sales to grants to beneficiary charities. Thanks to Killik & Co., Platform Securities, and our other partners, we benefit from many donated facilities including free broking services. We keep our costs to a minimum so that we can pass on as much of our income as possible to charity. The costs we do incur are covered by a combination of cash donations, income generated by our portfolios of shares, drawdowns from our reserves, and legacies received as cash. Only a small proportion of these funds are required to cover our costs every year – the remainder is designated to grant-making.

No. We transfer thousands of shareholdings every year, and as a result we cannot confirm the completion of all transfers. We would ordinarily only contact you after the receipt of your signed transfer form if there was a problem with the transfer. If you do specifically require confirmation of the transfer being completed do let us know, however please note that this is not the information you require for making a tax claim.

GiftAid is not applicable on donations of shares as it only applies to cash donations.
